Inside Windsor’s First Asian Supermarket

Earlier this month, Windsor’s West End welcomed the opening of MultiFood Supermarket– a seemingly ordinary small-time grocery store that took over the former location of the Food Basics. But looks can be deceiving, and the name and appearance of this market completely belies what is contained within.

Entering the grocery store, one is greeted by the unmistakable sights and smells of a real Asian market- a manner of exotic fruits and vegetables, with the slight whiff of durians in the air. MultiFood has everything you would expect from a proper Asian supermarket, selling produce from fresh galangal to durians, to lotus root. They also feature a seafood market- one of the only ones in Windsor selling a wide selection of fish and shellfish. Also they are very friendly to Muslim customers- featuring a separate butcher counter that exclusively sells Halal meat.

Also featuring a cooked meal counter

The opening of this new market is sure to benefit the local Chinese, Vietnamese and South Asian communities in Windsor. While there are a few smaller markets in the area, this is the first true supermarket of its kind in the city. I have high hopes that this one is going to stay around and survive, unlike the demise of its predecessor. In the meantime though, I will be stocking up on conch and rambutans!
